What A Wonderful Week!

'TIS THE HOLIDAY SEASON!
THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT OF OUR FOOD PANTRY......

It has been so nice to have a normal, uninterrupted week! The children came back to school on Monday ready to learn! We jumped right into our integrated language arts time as we explained the new tic-tac-toe boards. Take a look at the pictures below as the students work independently as well as with their teachers:
Guided reading with Ms. Lorfing

Sophia reads, traces and colors her spelling words.
Carmen works hard to write her spelling words in her Writing Words Book.

Emma works on an ordinal number match....
Learning about the NAMING part and the TELLING part of a sentence....

Guided practice in our Grammar books....

Jackson and Elizabeth share their Halloween stories with each other!
Guided reading time........
Sofia manipulates the contraction slide.....we have = we've
In math this week, Mrs. Waller introduced the concept of Fact Families. There are three numbers in a fact family for example: 5, 6, & 11 and these three numbers can create four math equations: 5+6=11, 6+5=11, 11-5=6, 11-6=5.  Since the children have learned about the ability to switcheroo addition problems and that the biggest number always goes first in subtraction.....they have caught on quickly. We will continue to review subtraction as well as we build concept upon each concept.
Family: 2,3,5: 3+2=5, 2+3=5, 5-2=3, & 5-3=2

Holden helps complete the facts....

John places the numbers in the right order to complete the facts...
A subtraction review with cards...remember the larger number goes first!
Carter working hard to review his subtraction!
Mastering our concept of FACT FAMILIES

During TNT we visited the computer lab and introduced DANCE MAT TYPING to the kids.

The students learned about the home row on the keyboard and how their hands should be placed. This is a great site that takes the children through different levels as they progress. Your kids picked this up so quickly.....visit dance mat typing at home and they will be typing research papers in no time at all!
Acquiring our keyboarding skills.....

In social studies Ms. Lorfing discussed Veterans Day on Monday, walking the children through their own Scholastic Magazine. As we complete these magazine articles we discuss the different characteristics of non-fiction text.....the children look for headings, labels and other attributes that distinguish non-fiction text from fiction text. Thursday Ms. Harris, our fabulous sub, discussed the changing of seasons with the children and what happens during this time of year. The children worked hard on their very own WINTER acrostic poems!

In Computer Lab the children visited the website www.roomrecess.com to help reinforce the learning of fact families, subjects and verbs, addition and subtraction.

Ask your child how to get milk to change colors....after hands-on science, they will know!
