Once Upon A Time...

We have concluded our Australia theme and sent home our theme pages on Tuesday.  Please praise your children for all of their hard work.  If there are incomplete pages you can have them finish them at home for fun.  We have moved on to a new exciting theme.....Fairy Tales & Folktales!

TNT (Try New Things)
 We are having so much fun as we dive into our fairy tales and folktales!  Each student picked out a tale to read, illustrate, and present  to the class.  The banner will hang in our classrooms. This gives each student a chance to learn about 20 new & different fairy tales!

D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything & Read)

Math
On Monday, in math we read a story How Tall?  Then, we finished doing our measurement scavenger hunt with a partner.  It was a blast!  We also played the Measurement is Right ....ask your children about it they had a great time playing! We also learned about non-standard measurement and practiced measuring objects with different measuring tools.

Social Studies
In Social Studies this we introduced the difference between a fairy tale & a folktale. We showed the kids a mystery PowerPoint where they had to guess which Fairy Tale it the picture revealed.  They learned about the difference between Fairy Tales & Folktales. The following day we did a Venn Diagram over two different versions & stories of the Three Little Pigs.  


Field Trip to the Kansas City Zoo 
We went on a field trip to the Kansas City Zoo thanks to the Cultural Arts committee.  Thank you so much to our volunteers: Mrs. Long, Mrs. Chinnock, Mrs. Collins & Mrs. Hendricks!!!! The kids loved seeing wallabies, kangaroos with joeys, polar bears, a black swan, a kookaburra & more!!! It reinforced everything they have been learning about in first grade!!!

Homework:
***Please help your child start collecting materials they might want to use for their fairy tale book banner. Some ideas: yarn, fake leaves/flowers, gems, fabric scraps, sticks, pipe cleaners,buttons,  etc.....clean out your craft rooms and send it on in! We will start this project during Wednesday's TNT time. This will be an in class assignment and it will not come home. Please do not go to the store just gather anything from home. Thanks!
