Our last days down under

Welcome back from spring break! We hope you enjoyed the extra time with your children. It has been fun to hear all about the fun things they did over break!

We've been busy this week wrapping up our Australia unit. Your children have learned so much and have had lots of fun doing it!

Language Arts Block
During centers, students finished up some Australia activities, practiced spelling words, and much more. In teacher-guided groups, we finished up our writing about going on a {fill in the blank} hunt. Students came up with an Australian animal to fill in the blank and adjectives to complete their writing. We also did guided reading. Students read a story at their level and practiced how strong readers do things before reading, during reading, and after reading.

Sorting sentences: real or fantasy?

Spelling on the iPad
Asking questions before we read a book
Australia memory
Graphing coins
Multiplication with kangaroos

Math
In math this week, we continued our study of measurement. Students went a measurement scavenger hunt and measured using inches and centimeters. We also talked about different kinds of measurement and vocabulary we use when talking about measurement. Students are showing that they know how to use a ruler, and know that it is an example of standard measurement.

How long are the scissors?
Measuring the door handle
Measuring a glue stick
Teamwork!
12 inches is 1 foot!
Measuring each other!
Social Studies/TNT
We wrapped up our Australian unit! Students got to watch and listen to a couple of different Australian themed stories. They also demonstrated how much they have learned about Australia by completing their theme notebook pages. The highlight of the week was taking a trip to the land down under, thanks to Oscar's dad and Sophie's parents! We had so much fun listening to them talk about their home land and seeing pictures and video of Australia. We even got to taste some yummy authentic Australian treats! What a fun way to culminate our study! Thank you so much to the DelPretes and Trainors!

Tasting a lamington
Trying some vegemite
Computer Lab
The children visited ABCya.com to create their very own word search with this week's spelling words. Once created, they completed this self-made search. We had a blast... one last review before the test! This would be a fun activity to help your child review their spelling words at home as well.

Hands on Science
Students learned all about what causes day and night. We read about the earth's rotation and did a demonstration to show how the sun stays in one place and the earth rotates, creating daytime when facing the sun and nighttime when facing away from the sun. We also talked about how the earth rotates around the sun. The children caught on so quickly! It was amazing to them that the earth moves at 1000 mph!

Since it is daytime in Kansas City, we are currently facing the sun
It is daytime on this side of the world
As the earth rotates away from the sun, it gets darker and darker
