Living the good life in 1st grade!

WE LOVE FIRST GRADE!!!!!!

Life has been really good in our new class the past 2 days!  We are enjoying getting to know your children and are so impressed at all they already know!

During our first day Mrs. Waller read this great book to the class.  Ask your child who this teacher in the book resembles.

 We know that learning can be tiring and so we practiced our yoga skills so we could stretch to regain our energy and focus.

TEAMWORK!!

We made a class web and passed a ball of yarn around the circle.  We took turns talking about our favorite part of the summer and what we look forward to most in first grade.  This activity is a great lead into our first social studies theme, "Myself, Others and a Caring Community".  We discussed that we need teamwork to make great things happen.  Everyone MUST work together to achieve success!

 Another team builder we did was the hula-hoop challenge.  We had to move the hoop around the circle without letting go of each other's hands.  We worked with each other on strategies to improve our time and then for the last round, the class asked Mrs. Waller and Ms. Lorfing to step out.  On their own, they set a new record!  55 seconds around the circle!  Awesome work!!!

INDEPENDENT TIME TOO!

 We did some independent activities too...We took time out to read silently and to practice our handwriting skills.  We wrote the date, our name, a sentence and numbers 0-9.  We will file this away and repeat at the end of the year to show how much progress we've made.

EXPECTATIONS OF 1st GRADE!!

Mrs. Waller read a book called, "God's Dream".  This was a great book to hear as we began our discussion of expectations we have in first grade. It talks about God's expectation for us and how we are to treat one another.  Ms. Lorfing then, followed up with a discussion of the life skills we use daily at St. Paul's.  The class chose 3 expectations based on life skills that we should have for ourselves in the classroom; "Show respect, be responsible and always have a good attitude."  We will make a poster showing these expectations we have and will sign our name on it to show we promise to live by these daily in our class!

SUMMERTIME FUN!!

We did a fun activity called, "Cool Slices of Summer".  We talked about our summer highlights, made self-portraits of our faces and the painted watermelon slices.  Then, we celebrated the end of summer and the beginning of the new school year by eating our own REAL slices of watermelon! 

Look for these wonderful, creative works of art to be on display sometime next week!

REMINDERS:
Please make sure you have taken the "Important Papers" homework folder out of your child's backpack and read all of the notes carefully.  When you can, please return the sheet back to school that tells us all about your child.  If your child has a reading log from books they read over the summer, please send it with your child so we can recognize these students during chapel. If you have lost the sheet you can just write the titles of the books on a piece of paper and bring it to us.  Please remember to send a snack and water bottle daily. 

We have truly enjoyed these past two days with your children and look forward to a wonderful school year!  Thank you for entrusting them with us!
