WOW!
What a busy first week we’ve had in first grade! We jumped right into our Language Arts
centers, and your children are doing great!
Before beginning centers, we worked with your children on a couple mini-lessons. Mrs. Sansale reviewed the Short A sound, and the students took turns underlining the words on the SmartBoard... sometimes we needed a bit of a boost :)
Then Miss O'Connor showed the students how to correct sentences. We love working on the SmartBoard!
After the mini-lessons, we were ready to roll! We started with two
centers this week- the writing center and the word work center. Take a look
at the pictures below:

Henry is using our class IPads to practice spelling. How fun!
Can Coco spot all the mistakes in the sentences? We think she can!
Victoria is cutting and pasting words to create a sentence!
We love learning at St. Paul's- especially when it involves puzzles! Just ask Simon!
Parker and Blakely reading Brand-new Pencils, Brand-new Books with the help of a voice recording
Alice is a star at rhyming words!
Destiny hard at work reading "Zac the Rat" on the computer
Max practicing his sight words with Miss O'Connor
Our Word Wall
As you can see, we have LOTS to do in our centers! We have
been busy reviewing rhyming words, proofreading sentences for the
correct beginning and end, writing the word wall, listening to Brand New Pencils, Brand New Books with
headphones, and completing short A
activities just to name a few. Eventually, we will add the
reading center and your child will visit each center weekly.
In math
this week we have been busy with number corner, which the kids love! We use the
date (ie: 20th) to review many concepts such as odd/even, tallies, equations,
etc. You can help your child by asking him/her to come up with equations to
equal each day’s date on the way to school each morning (ie: 17+3=20). They will be able to share their equations during
number corner!
We have also been reviewing repeating patterns and have
introduced growing patterns.
We used shapes to build repeating patterns as big as the Commons!
On Wednesday, we used Math Manipulatives to build both growing and repeating patterns!
On Thursday, we used Fruit Loops to make growing pattern necklaces!
In
Social Studies, we introduced our first theme, Myself, Others, and a Caring
Community. We read The Important Book
and learned that each of us are special in our own way. We even wrote a class book detailing each of
our strengths!
On
Tuesday, we read It’s Okay to Be Different.
Mrs. Sansale reviewed Venn Diagrams with the class, and then the
students paired up to talk about their similarities and differences!

Hands-on-Science was quite literally a BLAST! Ask your child what happens when gas builds up in a small space...
It explodes!! Don't worry, no one got hurt :)
