WE ARE FAMIILY!!!!!!!!

FIRST GRADE ROCKS!
Take a look at the pictures below from our integrated language arts block. We have continued to review short i with the word families -ick, -ill, -it, and ink. The students also continue to review compound words, work in their Handwriting Without Tears books, compare and contrast items using a venn diagram and write the word wall.  Your children are doing so well.  As they complete activities independently using their tic tac toe boards, they are also being pulled out for guided reading and to work on a variety of other skills with their teachers.
Reviewing MAGIC "C" letters....
Julian practices his MAGIC "C" letter before completing the page in his HWT workbook.
David and Evan play EVEN STEVEN/ODD TODD as a review of their even and odd numbers! Then they record their even numbers and odd numbers on their recording sheet and turn it in for the teachers to review.
Raquel builds -ick, -ink, -ill and -it words with play dough and uses five of them in sentences.

We worked on identifying the problem and solution of a story in guided reading this week.

Evan records the problem and connects it to the solution.

The compound word puzzle!
Lila matches up the two words that make one compound word, then places four in ABC order and records them on her sheet to be turned in.
These three explore the table of contents in their book as they learn to look things up by page number.
The students were introduced to their Writing Words Book, similar to a dictionary...Ms. Lorfing guided them as they reviewed the table of contents and looked up a variety of words.

One guided reading group read the story, Duke's Work, both together and independently...then they completed a clozed passage with words from a word bank to help them summarize this story about the kinds of work dogs can do.
In math this week we reviewed skip counting using the hundred chart; counting by five, tens and two's. We have also used the hundred chart in number corner to start helping us increase our sense of numbers.  We have talked about moving up one space or down one space and what that really means (you are actually adding or subtracting ten)...We have also introduced the concept of FRIENDS OF TEN which will help the children in their mental math computation.
When I skip count, I CAN  GO FASTER!
When counting by five your numbers will end in 5 or 0!
Counting by 2's
Asa is covering the numbers with his game pieces as he count by 5's on his hundred board.
Abby counts by 2's...when we do this we can visually see the pattern that is created.
OUR FRIENDS OF TEN!
Asa writes his FRIENDS OF TEN on his white board!
TEN FRAME FLASH
By tapping the smart board, Maddie makes a ten frame appear, then Elianna quickly taps the home button you see in the corner to make it disappear. This time the children did not tell us 2, they told us 8...the number of squares with no dots...8 & 2 are best friends!

Our book on rural, urban and suburban communities!

In social studies the children are learning all about community helpers and what it takes to be a part of a community. We also discussed the three types of community: rural, urban and suburban.  The students have also started to present their family collages and "How I Got My Name" information! We are learning so much. The children genuinely care about their friends and practice active listening as their peers present.

In TNT this week we practiced several life skills as we continued to build our sense of community within the classroom. We practiced patience, cooperation, perseverance, and organization to name a few! Ms. Lorfing and Mrs. Waller taught the kids the rhythm of the cups from the song, When I'm Gone. First we watched a video that contained a gymnasium full of high school aged children from Ireland sing the song and pass the cup around....great teamwork! We attempted to pass our cups to our neighbors once we learned the whole rhythm. We are still practicing, but enjoy the pictures and video below!

In Hands-On Science this week we continued our concept from last week...the students studied a variety of objects and made predictions in regards to whether the objects would sink or float when placed in water. Once again, Hands-On Science was a success!

Will the pencil float?
Can you see the paperclip? This group got it to float!

Today's challenge: can you get a ball of clay to float?

YES WE CAN!

In computer lab the students used the program, KIDSPIRATION to identify the differences between rurul, urban and suburban communities! They are pros!

PET BLESSING!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JAKE!

Not many reminders this week....simply return the permission slip form for our trip to the pumpkin patch when you can.  Also, remember that next Wednesday, the 24th, is a noon dismissal day. Carey and I will be developing our professionalism! Thank you and have a great weekend. Go enjoy the PLAZA ART FAIR. See you back here on Monday!
Love, Sara and Carey
