Wrappin' Up!

You've gotta have FUN at school!
Take a look at the pictures below for our integrated language arts time. Your children are doing so well working independently and staying on task. Ms. Lorfing has guided the children in small groups as they learn about VERBS/action words! Guided reading also continues as Mrs. Waller works with the students in small groups.  It is amazing to watch the growth here in ROOM 101!

Evan is creating a flap book to illustrate his understanding of our guided reading story. We have talked a lot this week about comprehension and it's meaning. When we read, we must understand the story!

Julian corrects the sentences and then writes them on his recording sheet!

RHYMING WORDS REVIEW!

The kids play I HAVE, WHO HAS with action verbs! I have RUN, who has SKIP?

Finley creates his very own community!

Page goes on an action verb hunt!

THE NEON SLATE! Write your spelling word and record it on a practice spelling test!
VERBS that POP!
Reading with the phones!
The students cut out their popcorn and complete their verbs that POP!

Abby uses her comprehension wheel to demonstrate her understanding of the story she just read in her guided reading group.
Right after chapel, occasionally we will do a short mini-lesson to review a concept being taught. This week the children were asked to go on a short "a" hunt independently while looking through a book. Many of the students had difficulty with this task; many would write down any word with an "a" and not listen to the sound. As a result, on Thursday morning we did a mini-lesson on short "a" for a review and then sent all children off on a hunt around the room.....above, Julian and Maddie are doing just that!

SIGN IT! SPELL IT! Page signs her spelling words and writes them on her recording sheet.

BANANAGRAMS with community helpers! The children use the BANANAGRAMS to spell the words

We are learning about what good readers to in our small reading groups. One of the things a good reader does is: ASK QUESTIONS!  Here, David is reading a non-fiction book on the migration of Monarch butterflies. If he has a question in his mind, he writes it down on a sticky note for his entire group to review when done with the story. WOW! Your children are amazing!

In math this week, Mrs. Waller has introduced the children to DOUBLES. Memorizing our doubles can help us when calculating math problems mentally. If a child knows that 5 + 5 = 10, then they will soon use this knowledge to calculate that 5 + 4(one less) = 9 (one less) or 5 + 6(one more) = 11(one more). We have learned a doubles rap (your children are quite the musical geniuses) to make the learning FUN! We continue to work with the hundred chart during number corner as we work to build our number sense! We review the concepts of odd/even, tallies, ten frames, etc.. almost every day. Ms. Lorfing also continues to work with the students and their problem solving strategies. Below Finley uses a chart to help him solve the problem!

Our DOUBLES RAP!

Our doubles flap book....we used these to study and quiz our partners!

The children play a doubles game: roll the die, double the number and cover that number on your board....the first person with 5 in a row wins!
Finley practices his doubles on his dry erase board!

In social studies in this week, Ms. Lorfing has wrapped up our study of Myself, Others and a Caring Community. The children have completed their flap book comparing rural, suburban, and urban communities. They have also continued to learn about a variety of community helpers.

Maddie brainstorms a list of things that a teacher does....from this list, she creates a complete sentence to demonstrate her knowledge.

Jack thinks about what a FARMER does within a community!

IN TNT on Wednesday we got together with Mrs. Sansale and Miss O'Connor's class to get pepped up for the buddy run! Your children are so excited and so creative. We came up with our very own lyrics to Take Me Out To The Ball Game! The song is now called: Take Me Out To The Buddy Run!  No kidding, this one may top the charts! The children were so excited!

Sorry there are not as many pictures as usual, as you know it was rainy and chilly. We did the best we could and your children still had so much fun. Thank you, Ann Fasel, for making it a great time!
