We Have the Spirit of Giving!

We have loved getting into the spirit of giving with the food drive this week!  Remember, it continues next week!!

 

Language Arts:

In centers this week, we focused on both the short "e" and short "u" sounds.

In guided groups, the students learned about -ed and -ing endings with Miss O'Connor.  With Mrs. Sansale, the students played Zap It, a fun sight word vocabulary game and learned how to write exceptional sentences. 

 

 

Math:

This week, we focused on comparing numbers up to 100 using less than, greater than, and equal to.  We also continued on subtraction and used the part/part/whole strategy to help us solve the equations. 

 

 

 

We also introduced a fun new classroom management technique called Classroom Dojo.  Individual students and teams can earn points for good teamwork and staying on task.  Each team got to come up with their own name.  We have Thanksgiving Turkey, Rudolph, Lets Go Royals, and Danish.  Look at all our cute little monsters :) 

TNT:

We played Thanksgiving JINGO and learned all sorts of interesting facts about the Pilgrims and Wampanoag! 

Social Studies:

On Monday and Tuesday, we learned about Veterans Day.  We talked about what it means to be a hero, and why servicemen and women in the military are heros.  Then we wrote letters to Veterans thanking them for their service. 

 

 

On Thursday, we started our short Thanksgiving Unit.  We learned what an acrostic poem is, and wrote our own to say Thank You to our loved ones. 

 

 

Hands-on-Science/Computer Lab:

 

In hands-on-science, we did a hibernation experiment!  Each group had two small jars filled with water and a pat of butter.  The butter represented the stored fat in the bears' bodies.  As we use energy, we burn up the fat and get hungry.  To show this, the students shook one jar, and the butter began to break apart and dissolve.  The butter in the other jar, which didn't move around, stayed in tact, so the hibernating bear would not get hungry.  We talked about how bears need to hibernate in winter when there is not much food to find.  How fun!

 

 

 

In computer lab, we played two games to review greater than/less than on ABCya, and then made an online snowman in anticipation of the snow tomorrow!

 

Reminders:

• Students will need to bring a lunch and drink next Thursday, November 20th, because we will be eating in the room after our field trip to the Folly.  We are seeing Stella, Queen of the Snow, from 9:00am-11:30am. 
• The FOOD DRIVE continues next week!  On Monday, we are collecting peanut butter and jelly for DOUBLE POINTS!
• NO SCHOOL: November 26th-30th for Thanksgiving Break
