What a PATRIOTIC week! We've been hard at work and play in the USA...
Language Arts Block
Thank you to our wonderful volunteer, Vera Becker, for helping our students practice their Hooray for the USA speeches!
Finding long a, e, i, o, and u words in our USA books
Finishing a follow up for the Sacajawea, Her True Story listening center
Reading long o and u books on www.starfall.com
Writing a journal entry on the American flag
Reviewing skip counting and even/odd numbers on Rocket Math
Completing theme pages
Number scrolls!!
Filling out a USA Map
Stamping bossy "e" words
Making a national landmarks poster
In guided groups, we continued our research projects on our famous Americans. Many of us completed our project this week, and everyone will finish up next week! They are learning critical skills, like picking out important facts from a paragraph, writing facts in their own words, etc. We are so proud of their hard work!
Math
We continued working with money this week, and boy are they experts now! On Tuesday, we learned that there are 293 ways to make a dollar with change! To practice making values in different ways, we played a game using our hundreds charts and change. The students took turns dropping a spacer on the hundreds chart. Whatever number it landed on, the group would have to make that number of cents 4 different ways. This is an easy game to play at home!
We also did an activity sheet that helped us remember the different Presidents that are on each coin. For example, how much money do you have with "2 Jeffersons and 7 Lincolns?" It was great to see so many of the children coming up with great combinations of coins to equal different amounts!
Social Studies
We continued our Hooray for the USA unit and focused on two important national landmarks- The Statue of Liberty and The White House.

TNT
We watched last year's Hooray for the USA program with the other class in preparation for our own. The kids are so excited for our upcoming program!
Hands-on-Science
Students were giving a straw, 3 strips of paper, and tape. They were encouraged to think of how they could use these materials to create an object that could fly. We then showed them how to make a "hoop glider." It was great to see their imaginations and creative concepts. They also hypothesized about what elements make the "hoop glider" fly.
Computer Lab
In computer lab this week, students practiced money and geography skills on abcYA.com.
Spelling- next week's words are focused on the long e vowel sound /ea/ and /ee/
Long e words: east, real, clean, mean, please, sheep, keep, street, beep, green
Challenge words: February, freedom, heart, Missouri
"Surprise the teacher word"
This test is challenging for students. To make it easier, we will separate the "ee" words and the "ea" words into two groups on the test. Encourage your child to study them in these groups if it is easier for them.
REMINDERS
*Start to gather your child's famous American costume and practice with your child for their specific part (extra parts were sent home today as well)
*Sign up for a conference time slot. A Sign Up Genius was sent out today.
*No book in the bag will be coming home next week
Have a wonderful weekend!
