HOORAY FOR THE U.S.A.!
We are hard at work researching, learning about the Statue of Liberty and George Washington, practicing our place value, counting our spare change, listening for the long "o" and long "u" sounds while watching out for the bossy "e"! So much to do in such little time. Take a look below from our language arts block this week:
| Writing about George Washington in our JUMBO Journals! |
| Working on our phonics skills.... |
| Handwriting Without Tears! |
| NUMBER SCROLLS.....introduced this week! The kids love them! Each sheet of paper is a blank hundred chart, once they complete the first 100, they will add another chart and complete the next 100! This is great to help their number sense develop at their individual levels. |
| Using pipe cleaners to string letters to make our spelling words! |
| Our first research project.....we are completing them one by one! |
| Maddie is using an image on the iPad to help her draw her famous American! |
In math we continue to practice coin recognition, creating different amounts of money and in some cases, even making change. We also continue to review the concept of place value and will do so until the end of the year.
| Crazy about our number scrolls! |
| Reviewing place value with BUILD IT, MAKE IT, BREAK IT! |
| TRADING UP! ....to get to a dollar! |
| SHOW ME WHAT YOU NEED....that students pull a card and shade in the coins they need to make the given amount! |
| Thursday the kids worked in teams to create the given amount. For example if Mrs. Waller gave them the amount, $.45 they would work together to create that amount and ring the buzzer when they agreed the correct amount was in the center of the table. One child was in charge of pennies, one was in charge of dimes, etc....what great collaboration going on here! |
| A GREAT DAY IN FIRST GRADE! |
In social studies the children have been learning all about the Statue of Liberty! So much to learn...their little brains are soaking it all in! Next week the students will begin their presentations of their paper dolls and the research of their famous American!
| A portrait of Lady Liberty! |
| A journal entry: The Statue of Liberty! |
THE ARRIVAL OF THE PAPER DOLLS!
The kids are always so excited and this year seems extra exciting! All the children had such positive things to say about their classmates' paper dolls. Thank you so much for your help and support of this amazing project. Your children are so proud. Next week, we will bring each doll into the classroom, one by one as they present their research on their famous American and share their paper doll!
In Hands-On Science we continued with our theme of aviation! The children were given three strips of paper; each 1" x 5", a straw and some tape......after making some predictions about what we could make with these items....we created our very own.....HOOP GLIDERS! Hands-On Science was so much fun!
| Listening to instructions! |
| Constructing..... |
| Almost there.... |
| Making our HOOP GLIDERS glide! |
