LOVE is in the air!!!

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

We started our week on Monday morning with a special guest author, Eloise Greenfield.  She shared her beautiful poetry with us.  She is an author of over 30 books.

Language Arts was full of LOVE this week!  We had lots of skill work and much of it was centered around Valentine's Day.  We just LOVE LOVE LOVE their hard work!

Elianna is working on writing her address and telephone number for this week's spelling test.
David and Maddie are making their buddy a Valentine card.

This group is making something special for mom and dad...it's a surprise!
We worked in our Scholastic News magazines and learned MORE facts about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.

Lila is making a fun Valentine craft.
Raquel is working on Mountain Language.
Jillian is practicing his "j"s in the "Handwriting Without Tears" book.
These readers have grown so much this year!  They know how to decode unknown words with ease.
Our listening center book this week was in honor of Valentine's Day.
Page is building words that have 2 vowels together.  She knows that when 2 vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.
Evan is on a long vowel word hunt.
In guided reading we read about some more famous Americans and worked on comprehension skills.
Lila is looking for fiction and non-fiction books from the Scholastic book order and is sorting them into categories
Finley is graphing data that was collected from the class using our "flat selves" from "Flat Stanley".
Griffin is tallying and adding coins with a money review game.

Starfall.com...we read a Valentine story and made valentines.

In guided reading Ms. Lorfing had a group read about the famous American Jane Goodall.  We discussed her important contributions to the education of chimpanzees and the destruction of their habitat.  We also talked about non-fiction book features that make reading this type of genre easier to read.

We reviewed expanded form using the smart board.
We used our spy caves while we took a 3rd quarter math assessment.

We reviewed money with a game called "Race to Draw".  As we moved on the game board we collected coins and when we landed on "BUY" we used the price list to create a creature.

Lila's crazy creature!

In social studies we celebrated Black History Month by learning about more famous Americans...
Harriett Tubman, Dr. George Washington Carver and Jackie Robinson.

Famous American dolls...Daniel Boone, Abraham Lincoln and Clara Barton

In computer lab we played valentine games on primarygames.com and abcya.com

In hands on science we made lava love lamps.  We learned that oil and water don't mix and that when adding alka seltzer tablets bubbles caused the water and oil to mix causing a chemical reaction.  Glitter and confetti added a fun valentine touch!

A few weeks ago on a very warm February day we took advantage of the 70 degree weather and celebrated our BIG achievement as the class with most contributions to the food pantry during the "Feed the Need" week last fall. We had a blast swinging on the swings, playing basketball, soccer, hula hooping and just running free!
