Spring is in the air!

The energy was running high this week as we prepared for a much needed break!  We hope everyone enjoys the break.  Safe travels to all who are vacationing somewhere!  Now, sit back and take a peek at all we accomplished this week!

In language arts we integrated our Australian theme into several activities.  The class has learned so much about Australia and all the amazing animals that inhabit the country.
Scrambled Sentences

St. Patrick's Day learning packet.
Hundred board review
"ar" word review with Starfall.com

We read an Irish story this week in guided reading.  We loved reading about the tricky leprechaun.

Mrs. Waller is guiding the class through a writing activity with their Australian animals.  This activity was inspired from the story, "We're Going on a Bear Hunt".  They have to use what they know about their animal and share how they'd find their animal in Australia.

Here is the list of verbs, obstacles and adjectives we can use while we're writing our story.

In social studies we've started sharing our reports and our animals.  This was our second opportunity to do research and write a report and then share it with the class.  These animals are amazing thanks to the first graders hard work and their parent's help at home!

Hands on Science
We discussed the rotation of the earth around the sun.  We learned that as the earth spins it moves away from the earth.  This creates day and night.  Then, we went outside and traced our shadows with chalk on the playground.  When we went back outside after lunch we were able to see that the earth had moved because our shadows changed.

In computer lab we used the ipads to do an activity on the app called "Puppet Pals".  We took pictures of our Australian animals and created backgrounds.  Then, we recorded our voices sharing all the interesting facts we've learned about our animals.
