We
finished our "Folk tale and Fairytale" theme this week and are jumping
into our last theme of the year, "Poetry". We took a break from our
tic-tac-toe boards this week and were able to enjoy some fun
literature-rich group activities. Take a look at all the fun from this
week!
Mrs. Waller read The Three Questions
based on the story by Leo Tolstoy. In this amazing book, a little boy
goes on a journey to find the answers to three very important questions
(see below). This is a great book to add to your libraries at home!
Another
activity we did was to collaborate and record all the things we
remembered about our first grade year. Once a good list was made, we
created the cover of our very special memory books. This book will come
home at the end of the year and will have fun activities we've
completed during the year. We were all surprised at all that we've
completed together! Such great memories!!

WOW!! FABULOUS!! INCREDIBLE!!
We have started a collection of notes for our classmates. When someone notices something incredible or nice another student has done, they write what they noticed on a post-it and then put it up on the cork board for others to read. This is a wonderful way to show all the great random acts of kindness others are doing every single day in our class!
We're making a special surprise for someone special in our homes for a special day coming up soon...
We made a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between 1st grade and kindergarten. It was amazing to see how much more we have been able to do this year as BIG 1st graders!
We reviewed spelling by working on plurals with the endings "ch, sh, z, x, ss, and tch".
Celebration time!!
We enjoyed a special cookie treat to celebrate the end of our fairytale and folk tale theme. Special thanks to the room parents for picking up these very cute and yummy cookies!
In social studies we had the opportunity to share our fantastic cooperative group story maps. Each group divided up the presentation to make sure everyone had equal time to share. Everyone did such an incredible job working together and learning from their classmates.
Jack and the Beanstalk
Goldilocks and the 3 Bears
Hansel and Gretel
The 3 Little Pigs
Little Red Riding Hood
The 3 Billy Goats Gruff
Getting ready for the lemonade and cookie stand!!
We have worked so hard to be prepared for our stand. We have made posters and fliers, set goals for success, discussed economics, supply and demand, counting change, the jobs involved at the stand and proper etiquette while working and talking to customers. Whew...what an event!
Special thanks goes to Century Marketing Inc. for donating the T-shirts for us! We LOVE them and will really "stand" out at our stand!
Distributing fliers throughout the school.

In
math this week we focused on 3-D shapes.
Going
on a 3-D scavenger hunt around the school. So many different shapes!
We never knew there were so many right in front of us!

Starting next week we are stopping the book in a bag program for the remainder of the year.
Next week is the 4th annual book swap for 1st - 4th graders. Students who wish to participate may bring in their gently used books. They will receive a ticket for each book brought in up to 5 books.
On Friday afternoon, May 8th, each class will browse the book collection and students can refresh their reading stash before summer vacation begins! Students should bring books that are on or above their grade level to ensure that all students are happy with their new reading selection.
Thank you to all our parents for volunteering your time for our lemonade/cookie stand today. We couldn't do it without you!
See you at there!
Sara and Carey
