POETRY
We were very busy this week as we explore the magical world of poetry! We are learning about similes, metaphors and other devices poets use to create entertaining work. Take a look at the pictures below from our Language Arts block!

In math this week, Mrs. Waller has been working in small groups with children to differentiate math instruction. Those not working with the teacher are working independently with a tic tac toe board. This math tic tac toe board, similar to our language arts boards and covers the many different skills we have covered throughout the year. Your children are working so hard even though they know summer is right around the corner. We are so proud of them!

In social studies this week, Ms. Lorfing has introduced HAIKUs to the children....they are enthralled and really enjoying creating their own pieces of work. They have also been working on their very on CINQUAIN poems....and every chance we get we are reading different kinds of poetry to them. This is only a taste of the poetry they will explore in second grade!

THE FIELD
Tuesday we celebrated our successful lemonade stand up on the field with our first grade friends and popsicles!
Kindergarten Visit!
We had so much fun when Kindergarten visited our room Thursday. Take a look at the pictures below.
Congratulations....we are finished with our BOOK IN A BAG program! If you have any books at home, please return them.Your children have been so responsible. Thank you for signing the calendars nightly and helping your children learn to love reading. We see it in the classroom every day!
Hands on Science
SODA GEYSER!
We discussed what happens when chemicals react. We combined a nucleation site (mentos) and carbon dioxide in Diet Coke (we used diet to reduce the sticky mess that can come with sugar!) We did not get a great shot of the geyser, but you can tell from the excitement on their faces that it was a success.
SPELLING
We will have one more spelling test!

Our friends in HAITI will receive many Moringa trees! YEA! Thank you again for your support. The kids had a blast. We turned in all of the money in this week and the kids got to announce their grand total! THEY ARE SO PROUD!

REMINDERS
Monday, May 11th- we will be visiting 2nd grade to see what it is all about!
Thursday, May 14th- Room 101's DAY OF READING! When talking in our classroom about 3 weeks ago we discovered that the children would love to have a day of reading...there are so many books we still have to read to them and there are so many books they still want to read on there own! PJs, stuffed animals, and flashlights will be involved, more details to come!
Friday, May 15th- our last spelling test and SPIRIT DAY!
Thursday, May 21st- SKATING PARTY field trip! Permission slip and details to come next week. Please join us if you can!
Hard to believe we are approaching the end of school. We our enjoying every minute and soaking it all in (Mrs. Waller is trying hard not to cry)..... Enjoy the weekend!
