We are POETS and we KNOW IT!

A poem in honor of our Merry Month of May:

1st grade

1st grade is the best,
simply better than the rest!

We work and we play,
we wish in 1st grade we could stay!

Language Arts
We love poetry! Many of our centers and guided groups this week focused on writing different types of poetry and reading poems as well. We also practiced spelling words, creative writing, grammar, phonics, and wrote another journal entry.

We couldn't wait to show Mrs. Cutcliffe how much we raised from the lemonade stand!

In guided groups, we pulled students back individually to review skills we've learned throughout the year.  It is incredible to see how much they've learned!

K visits 1st!
Your children did a wonderful job showing Kindergarten what 1st grade is all about.  They certainly acted like role models to the future 1st graders!

Math:

We have been working on logical thinking problems and also reviewing concepts from the whole year.  We learned how to use a new fantastic math tool, called Versatiles!  They will be using these a lot in second grade, so they are ahead of the game!

Social Studies

We have been learning all about poetry!  We read books to figure out "what makes a poem a poem", added our ideas to our "Poet-Tree", wrote acrostic poems about summer, and wrote shape poems about what we love.

Fun opportunity for the last week of school:
It is hard to believe that Field Day is just around the corner!

Traditionally our 3rd-5th grade students enjoy lunch on the upper field between their Field Day activities on Tuesday. This year, we want to invite our Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students and families to come and join us for a picnic lunch on the lawn on Tuesday, May 19.

Put on your sunglasses and bring your favorite picnic blanket! Lunch options include:
  • Pack a picnic lunch for yourself and/or your children, or grab your favorite take-out lunch on your way to the school.
  • Sign up for a hotdog lunch through the school. Students will sign up for hot lunch with their class as normal, but parents need to pre-order their lunch by clicking here. To ensure we have enough food prepared for students and guests, guest lunches will not be available unless pre-ordered.

Field Day Schedule

*Parents bringing their own lunch can remain on the upper field following the Parent/Child activities. Parents who pre-ordered a hotdog lunch can go to the lunch room with their child’s class.

**Parents bringing their own lunch can go directly to the upper field. Parents who pre-ordered a hotdog lunch can go to the lunch room and meet their child’s class at the starting time listed above.

We just can't believe there are only 9 school days left. We have loved working with your children and seeing how much growth they've all made. We plan to soak up lots of learning and smiles over the next few days!!
