A Short Week!

Although it was a short week, it was a full one! This week in centers we continued working on ABC order, short 'a' words, spelling, writing, rhyming, and differentiating between declarative, interrogative, and exclamatory sentences. As they become more familiar with the routine of centers, the kids are working more confidently and are enjoying the varying activities that comprise their word work and writing tic-tac-toe boards. Next week we'll add a reading board! This week the teachers also pulled each child aside to read sight words. We'll be working on flash cards in the near future.

In math this week we read Tally O'Malley by Stuart J. Murphy and had a fun scavenger hunt around the classroom! The kids counted various items in the room and recorded their findings with tally marks. Mrs. Sansale's class learned a bit about missing addends in equations; our handy number lines helped us with this! We'll continue to work on this concept next week. Ms. Lorfing's class read Even Steven and Odd Todd and worked a bit more with even and odd numbers.

In social studies we read The Incredible You. The kids had fun talking about what they love and created individual pages for our very own Incredible You books! Both classes also worked in their theme notebooks. We learned about different types of communities and locations (including farms, suburbs, and cities), transportation, natural and human characteristics of places, as well as the basic needs of a person. We also shared some of the collages that have been turned in. We'd like to have them all in by the 21st; the kids love to share their work and talk about their families!

Family Collages
The kids made colorful name papers with jewels, corn kernels, couscous, and more in TNT with Ms. Lorfing. Mrs. Sansale's class made their papers last week using colorful bits of construction paper.

In computer lab with Ms. Lorfing and Miss Ahrens, the kids reinforced ABC order by playing an ABC slider puzzle game on abcya. Number Ninja helped us practice even and odd numbers.

In science the kids had a great time learning about living and non-living things with Mrs. Sansale and Mr. Ronan. They classified pictures in one of two columns (living or non-living).

Mrs. Sansale's class met their 7th grade buddies this week! The first graders were SO excited about this and had been looking forward to it since school started!
