FIRST MONTH IN FIRST!

Wow! What a week!  This week we added another tic-tac-toe board the reading board.  We also started pulling the children from centers into guided reading groups.  Your children continue to impress us, and we are so grateful to all of you for entrusting them to us everyday.  Here are a few things we have been working on this week:

MATH- This week, we have been working on Friends of Ten and switcheroos or turn around facts.  So if 7+2=9 than 2+7=9.  The sum always stays the same. We are continuing our number corner everyday as well. The equations your children come up with are becoming more and more impressive!

Mr. Ronan teaching them how certain numbers are best friends.

Ms. Lorfing & Mrs. Sansale taught turn around facts this week.

The kids used dominoes & dice to write switcheroos.

SOCIAL STUDIES--In Social Studies the students have been presenting their FAMILY COLLAGES. This is a great way for the students to learn to be a good listener and to practice their public speaking skills in front of their classmates.  The students love learning information and new things about one another.  We continue to work in our theme notebooks as we learn about ourselves, others and our caring community.  This theme is such a great way to start the year as we build our own amazing classroom community.

Ms. Lorfing & Mr. Ronan's class met their buddies this week.  What a special treat!

HANDS ON SCIENCE: We learned all about surface tension, skin & cohesion.  We did an experiment and tried to get a paper clip to float by tissue paper while using a pencil to press it down.  The kids can't wait to show you this experiment at home this weekend.

Every Wednesday First Grade gets the opportunity to have a picnic and eat outside on the tables up on the soccer field.  We also get to have recess up there. We are doing this as much as possible before the weather gets cold.
