In Language arts this week our focus was on short "o" vowel sound. We also reviewed writing complete sentences, identified correct punctuation at the end of sentences, practiced our handwriting skills, worked on our spooky Halloween stories and reviewed nouns, verbs and adjectives along with some great reading practice. Whew...we sure do a lot in 1st grade!

Mr. Ronan's skill group reviewed nouns, verbs and adjectives with a book called "I Went Walking". They got to choose their own couplet to make their own "I Went Walking" writing piece. Look for these on the bulletin board at conferences.

In math we took a 1st quarter assessment to review all the skills taught since the beginning of the year. This will help us determine where to go from here! We also continued to review the concept of doubles and missing addends!

In social studies this week, we have continued to guide the children in their study of bears. We are wrapping up our study of black bears and we have moved on to the brown bears! The children are loving it....we are all having a blast....including the BEARS in the classroom!
Hands-on Science
We experimented with gummy bears today. We made a hypothesis about what would happen if a gummy bear is added to water. We observed them after a few minutes and then a few hours and recorded our results. We can't wait to see what they will look like on Monday!
In computer lab we learned some very important computer skills that will help us become more independent computer users. We first learned the placement of our fingers on the keyboard. Then, we learned how to go onto Safari and type in an internet address such as abcya.com. Then, we learned how to quit the program. Last, we went onto Microsoft Word and practiced typing our spelling words on a word doc. We were so proud of their listening skills and abilities!
IMPORTANT INFO AND REMINDERS:
We will not have a spelling test next week due to parent/teacher conferences. Look for a new list of words to come home next Wednesday for the following week.
Class Halloween parties are on Wednesday afternoon starting at 2:00. All parents are welcome to join us. Students may wear costumes to school but please no weapons or gory costumes.
We will see you on Thursday, Oct.29th or Friday, Oct. 30th at parent/teacher conferences.
Lower school pumpkin display: Mon. Oct 26th-Wed. 28:
Students may bring in decorated pumpkins on Monday and carved pumpkins Tuesday and Wednesday to display in our commons. All pumpkins will be sent home on Wednesday at the end of the day.
