THE PLANE IS TAKING OFF...

We are ready to board the plane in Australia and head back to the good 'ol USA! We've had so much fun in the Land Down Under.  Take a look at all the great things we've accomplished this week!

Knowing Easter was on Sunday, we reviewed compound words by looking for 2 words on separate eggs and matched them together to make a new word.  We also used a fun activities to reinforce place value skills and reading skills.  Clue cards gave the information as to where to place each number.  Once the number was formed it was recorded on a sheet.  Another Easter activity helped us review adjectives, nouns and verbs.  We had to put each labeled egg in the correct category.  One other activity involved reading sentences about rabbits and then identifying if the sentence shares something that is real or make-believe about a rabbit. Then each sentence was sorted and recorded.

Chloe is recording spelling words in her "Word Book".
Jasmine is recalling facts she's learned about Australia in her theme notebook.
Rock is identifying books that are fiction and non-fiction.
Bennett is practicing spelling words with bananagrams.
Channing and Keuffer are playing a shape game.
Gabriel is making a "shape" man!
Lauren is retelling what she remembers after reading a Scholastic News article on koalas.
A fun Easter activity.

We practiced our money skills with the Smartboard.  We had to identify who had more coins and then record the amount by writing it's value as well as using a stamp with the coin amount.

This week in TNT we were fortunate enough to have the Brooks family share some great information on Australia. Gabriel's dad shared a wonderful slide show.  Some other things the family brought to share were bills and coins, a boomerang and a special Australian cookie treat!  THANK YOU Brooks family for sharing with us all!

Here is our book of Australian facts.  We've all learned so much about this wonderful country.  Take some time this weekend to quiz your child on all the great info he/she has learned.  Ask questions about the land, the people, food, animals, ocean...they should all have lots to share with you if they haven't already!!

We finished up all the rest of our Australian reports this week.  It is wonderful to have opportunities for our peers to teach us new information.  Sharing a report gives us the chance to talk in front of a group as well.

We discussed 3-D shapes in math this week.  We compared them to 2-D shapes and discussed the similarities and differences.

We identified the names of each 3-D shape and sorted them with a smartboard activity.

Identifying 3-D shapes with a shape game.
Then, we went on a 3-D shape hunt around the room and commons.  We found so many different shapes!!!!
Madeline found a sphere...the globe!
Cal found a cone on the glue bottle.
Graphing the shapes we found.

ApRiL FoOlS dAy!!!
We made a pan of brown "e"s to share with the class.    We also tried to solve a maze that had no end.  It took about 5 minutes before someone realized it must be an April Fool's Day joke.  Don't be surprised if you're offered a yummy "brown e" after school today!  Haha!!!

We celebrated Fritz's birthday last week...HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRITZ!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Caroline and Channing!!

In hands on science we discussed the earth's rotation around the earth and how we have day and night.  We found out the earth spins 1,000 miles an hour and takes 365-366 days to travel around the sun.  We also discussed how the sun is a star and never moves.  We then traced our shadows outside in the morning and then went out later to see how our shadows have moved as the earth spins.

In computer lab we used ipads with the "puppet pal" app to record and share information on our Australian animals.

Don't miss out on these fabulous gifts that will be sold with the silent items at the auction this weekend.

The first is the community art project that Ms. Lorfing's class created during our first unit, Myself, Others and a Caring Community...it would be a wonderful addition to any bedroom! The kids are excited and we were happy to donate it!

The second gift will be donated by all four first grade teachers....a FABULOUS FAMOUS AMERICAN PRINT of each of our first grade classes!

The third gift will also be donated by all four first grade teachers...an INDIVIDUAL PRINT of each child dressed up as his/her famous American.

We decided, this year, to make class prints available to everyone so you can have the opportunity to have this keepsake of the special day.  We also managed to capture adorable prints of each child dressed in their costumes.  If you are unable to make it to the auction this weekend but would like a print of each please let us know.  We will have each class picture hanging in our rooms on Monday and we're happy to show you your child's individual shot for purchase.  Pictures (both class and individual) are $25 each with the option of purchasing the individual print with the digital file for $40

It is hard to believe that we have come to the end of yet, another theme. Lucky for you , no more big projects. We will start our study of Fairy Tales and Folktales when the children return on Monday.  AND...We're happy to announce Mr. Ronan will be returning for the remainder of the year!  We're all so glad to have him back!

 Have a great weekend!
