We've been busy this week continuing our Australia unit. Your children have learned so much and have had lots of fun doing it!  Our Australian Animal Hunt stories are published and hanging outside our room ready for you to read!  Check them out!  We were so lucky to have Ms. Lorfing tell us all about her Haiti trip over Spring Break.  The first graders there loved our friendship bracelets the kids made them.

During Social Studies we have started presenting our Australian Animal Reports and the kids love showing off their animals.  What a neat way to learn about all the Australian Animals!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ADA!!!!

In Language Arts this week we focused on the "ir" & "ur" sounds in our Phonics books.  We also worked on Nouns in our Grammar Books. In Guided reading we are working on different reading strategies as well as doing story picture walks.  We did a sentence assessment over punctuation.

In Math this week we are introducing and working with 2D Shapes.  This is a review from Kindergarten as well as expanding our knowledge about shapes.  We differentiated into different math groups so different kids were doing different math activities on all different levels. Some kids were sorting 2D shapes in categories, some were making a flip book by tracing and drawing shapes and others were going on a math shape scavenger hunt.

A Note From Mrs. Abio:

JOIN US FOR CHAPEL ON MONDAY, MARCH 28th at 8:40 AM.

Please join us for a special Haiti Kick Off Chapel on Monday, March 28th in the ECC Commons. Chapel begins at 8:40 am. We will share pictures and highlights from our recent trip, and will inspire our kids to get out there and work hard to raise money for Holy Cross School. Fundraising efforts will support the food program for the 2016/17 school year. The teachers at Holy Cross School are so grateful for our support.

Holy Cross is also in need of financial support to purchase the following items:

  • School Supplies – Story Books, Textbooks, Student Workbooks, French to Spanish Dictionaries
  • Furniture – Several teachers as well as our cooks are without chairs. They need money to purchase the wood and money to pay for the labor to build chairs that will be safe, lasting and durable.
  • Money to compensate the cooks for their hard work.

INFORMATION ABOUT HOLY CROSS SCHOOL

  • Salaries – range from $40.00 Month to $130.00 Month – 13 total teachers
  • Food Program - $2000.00 Per Month (Rice & Beans)
  • Textbooks/Supplies - $500.00/Month

The total cost to educate a child at Holy Cross School = $150.00 Per Student/Per Year
Current Enrollment
·         Kindergarten through 6th Grade = 371 Students
·         7th, 8th and 9th Grades = 43 Students (We currently do not provide funds to support the middle school, this is a future goal)

WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

Enjoy your long weekend.  Love, The First Grade Teachers
