Blogging Bears

The Halloween Ball Party Pics...

Bear Planet
We have started rehearsing for our Bear Planet Production and with Mr. Held’s help, we are doing great! The bear scripts and your child’s parts will be coming home this Friday. PLEASE RETURN THE SCRIPT EACH DAY TO SCHOOL WITH YOUR CHILD SO WE CAN PRACTICE AT SCHOOL. REMEMBER TO PRACTICE EVERY NIGHT. You can practice in front of a mirror or use your parents or siblings for an audience. We will not have Spelling test this week or next week so this will give you time to practice!!! We will send home the new spelling packet on Friday of this week and the test will be on Friday, November 19th. This will give you two weeks to study your spelling words. Remember that the challenge words are optional.

The spelling words for Spelling packet #4 are:
get, green, have, don't, nine, old, red, seven, the, go
Challenge Words: November, turkey, claws, polar, surprise the teacher word

We had such a good time with our 7th Grade Buddies at the Buddy Read In this week! Our buddies read to us and we read to them all about bears. Then we drew a picture from our book and they are hanging in the hall outside the ECC building. Check them out! We have almost reached our reading goal of 20,000 pages!!

Book Fair
We loved reading with Mr. N and browsing for new books. It was so fun and we got to eat a yummy treat at the end! We try to remember the five finger rule when we are looking for a book. Every time we come to a word that we don’t know we put up a finger. If we have five fingers up on one page, then the book is too hard for us. Use this strategy at home when you are trying to choose a “Just Right Book.”

St. Paul's News
St. Paul’s will always remember Matt Skeens!
As many of you may know, we had Matt Skeens' funeral on Wednesday. But truly, it became a beautiful celebration of his life--of a big boy with an even bigger heart. A boy that we saw grow into a bright, caring young man. A boy who reached the highest honor within the Boy Scout ranks as an Eagle Scout almost one year ago.

Thank you so much for all that you do in making this such a wonderful and supportive community, not only for our children, but for their families, too.

David Nieves, herpetologist and author, came to our school on November 2nd to share his reptilian friends and books "Reptiles up Close", "More Reptiles Up Close" and soon to be released "Amphibians Up Close." David was also with us to kick off the book fair. David brought some of his friends to our school. He brought an alligator snapping turtle, a blue tongued skink native to Australia, a green tree skink, a rat snake, a python from Australia, and a reticulated python that was 20 feet long!! The children enjoyed all of these reptiles!

Centers this week:

We have been continuing reading in our Guided Reading Books. We are learning about all different types of bears and working in our theme notebooks. The listening centers have all been about bears which are followed by a bear book talk. We made polar bear puppets out of a white paper bag. Unscrambling bear facts is one of our favorite things to do during centers.

Math:

We have been working on greater than and less than. One day we played the card game "War" to practice this math concept. The other day we used dominoes, calendar numbers and alligator mouths to show greater than and less than. We are continuing to master our bear logic math problems. These are higher level thinking problems. The children have to use the clues to help them solve the answer. We have been using teddy bear manipulatives to figure out the answers.

Social Studies:

We watched a wonderful short theme video titled: Grizzly Bears. This video explained to the children how grizzly bears live in the Rocky Mountain of North America. The children learned all about how they have brown fur with silver tips which makes them look old and grizzled. Thank you to Mr. McDowell who brought in two huge bear rugs for the first grade to borrow!!!

Computer Lab with Fate & Wiedeman
We played some fun Berenstain Bear Games on the website:

Hands on Science with Waller & Taylor

The students will explain what keeps Polar Bears warm in the Arctic by experiencing a layer of blubber to protect them. They will listen to a story called Little Polar Bear by Hans de Bear. Then they will answer questions about the story. The children will write their responses down and then get to experience the blubber glove. They will make the blubber glove by using two zip lock plastic bags and filling one with Crisco (about 1 cup). Use the other bag to place on top of the Crisco so the students are not touching the Crisco. They will attempt to zip the bags together by having the top one inside out. Then a bowl will be filled with water and ice, and the teachers will guide the students in putting the glove on and putting their hand in the water. The teachers will tell them to pretend they are polar bears ready to dive into the cold icy water. The lab activity sheet will take place at the end of the experiment.
