Snowmageddon School Year

We have added a parent resources page to our blog on the right hand side of the screen. It has information, books and activities. We apologize for a page that is missing from our blog from the last week. We don't know where it disappeared to but we are still trying to figure that out.

Centers this week:

Monday & Thursday- Guided center with Miss Fate working on our math facts. We practiced addition and subtraction in the 1,000's, 100's, 10's, and 1's place. We demonstrated a couple of problems showing carrying however since it hasn't been taught we just tried a few. We did not regroup or borrow. We continued this concept later in math this week.

Since we missed Groundhog Day at school we listened to a story called Groundhog Day. Then the children worked in a fun Groundhog Day packet.

We had a guided reading center with Mrs. Waller. We are reading all about Harriet Tubman, The Gingerbread Story and some American Folk Tales.

Independently the children did a cut and paste National Landmarks activity learning all about the White House, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Capitol Dome and more.

The children listened to the story, At 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and then worked independently in their phonics workbooks.

In a guided center with Miss Fate the children worked in their theme pages on Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln.

Independently the children wrote about many landmarks they have visited. They also had the chance to write down the landmarks they want to visit and then they drew a picture of themselves at a landmark. FYI: The Statue of Liberty was the most popular!!

In a guided center with Mrs. Waller the children had a Geography map lesson learning all about the 13 colonies. They identified the states by looking at a map then had to outline each state with a different color and match the state name with that same color.

Math--Miss Fate has been working on tens and ones. For instance: 70=____tens ex: 95=____tens _____ones, we did some patterns and word problems in the theme pages as well.

Miss Fate also taught the children how to add 2,3,4, digit numbers together with 2,3,4 digits.

They also learned how to subtract 2,3,4, digits from 2,3,4 digits without carrying.

Another fun thing we learned was how to add 10 single digits at once by grouping two numbers together and then adding them onto the next two numbers.

We are also adding with missing addends. For instance: 40 +____=48, 62+____=65

We did problems such as 4+(9+0), 5+(2+2) Can you believe all this math?? Try some of this with your child at home.

Mrs. Waller introduced telling time with the children. This is a difficult first grade concept to grasp. They used hand held analog Judy clocks to show the correct time. They watched a short video on Telling Time. It discussed learning the time today, parts of an analog clock, telling time to the hour, AM and PM and telling time to the Half Hour. If you have an analog watch for your child have them wear it to school for practice. You can help us reinforce this concept at home and throughout the day and night.

Social Studies--Thank you again for your wonderful paper dolls!!They are the best we have ever seen!! The children have enjoyed sharing and speaking about their dolls and research reports with each other. It is a great way to learn all about other Famous Americans.

WE LOVED SHARING OUR CITIZENSHIP PAPERS THEY ARE HANGING IN THE PRIMARY COMMONS OUTSIDE OUR DOOR....COME CHECK THEM OUT!

WE LIKED SHOWING OFF OUR PAPER DOLLS...WE FOUND OUT THAT MANY OF THE SUPPLIES CAME FROM HOBBY LOBBY, MICHAELS, OR A FABRIC STORE. WE COULD NOT BELIEVE THE TALENT OUR PARENTS HAVE WHEN IT COMES TO CRAFTS!!! THEY ARE ALSO HANGING IN THE COMMONS BY THE SPANISH ROOM.
WE LOVED LEARNING ALL ABOUT ALL THE FAMOUS AMERICANS IT WAS SO COOL!! WE ARE PUTTING THEIR REPORTS & GRADES IN THEIR MEMORY BOOKS SO YOU WON'T SEE THEM AGAIN UNTIL THE END OF THE YEAR.

Instead of Hands on Science this week we are doing theme singing with Mrs. Waller, Mrs. Wiedeman and Mrs. Linn on the piano. We love practicing and singing our U.S.A. songs!!

In the computer lab with Miss Fate & Miss Taylor we are continuing our State Webquest. Today we found out the population, state song, state nickname, motto, industries, lakes, rivers, bordering states and more! Thanks to Mrs. Sage & Mrs. Tidwell for their help today!!
