Mountain Language Guided with Mrs. Waller the numbers correspond to the children's paper. Each day we can flip the chart for new problems. We also have this for Mountain Math. This is a great review of different concepts. Eventually, the kids will be doing this on their own independently.

Math:
Miss Fate introduced fact families with manipulative chips and popsicle sticks. The children used the popsicle sticks to help the remember each family has 3 members. The biggest number is the "boss" number. Then the children had to write the equations out....for example: 3+4=7, 4+3=7, 7-4=3, 7-3=4. This will help them in learning their math facts.
On the second day the children reviewed and used dominoes to pull their math equation. They had to take their equation draw the domino and figure out the 4 equations for each problem.
Mrs. Waller taught them how to group numbers to help them learn how to count faster. She did a lesson using chips and ten frames. Mrs. Waller would flash the children a ten frame with X's on it. They would get 3 seconds to see the problem. Then, she would call them to have them tell her what they saw. They had to figure out if they saw 3 crossed out of 10 than there were 7 that were blank. The kids made flashcards and shared them with their friends. The book that was used the second day was Math for All Seasons by Greg Tang and this book helps the children learn how to group numbers without counting one to one. This is a wonderful math book that we use to help the children group numbers by visualizing and using the pictures.

Miss Waller practiced the bear play with the children. Miss Fate taught the children all about the different kinds of bears as they worked in their theme notebooks.
Hands on Science: Our class did an experiment & lab sheet about Polar Bear Pie. We ate special Klondike Polar Bear ice cream bars to help us figure out how many bites it took us to get to the center.

Let Your Imagination Soar: Read! Mark your calendar and stop by the book fair Sunday November 6th from 11:00-3:00 in the gymnasium. The Reading Reptile is providing us with a great selection of children’s and young adult books just in time for the holidays or to restock your home library. Looking for a new gift idea? Purchase a prepaid $10, $15 or $20 birthday book card and Mr. N will select a book to be donated to the library in honor of your child’s birthday during his/her birthday month, or purchase a teacher selected “wish book” that will be added to the library in your name. Students will visit the book fair on Monday, November 7 and Tuesday, November 8th.

We have a wonderful opportunity to help Mr. N. our librarian raise an additional $5,000 for the library over the next 5 days in conjunction with our upcoming book fair. He has challenged the entire school to read 50,000 pages before the end of the book fair on Tuesday. If they can rise to the challenge the library will receive an additional $5,000 above and beyond what they make at the book fair. “LET YOUR IMAGINATION SOAR… READ, READ, READ!” Keep track of your pages and turn them in on that blue slip of paper to your child's classroom teacher!!! The class who has the most will get a special kite flying day and a plaque with the teacher's name on it.
