As we near the end of the first theme:Myself, Others, & A Caring Community, we have spent the last five weeks exploring friendship, similarities, differences, and family.  Students have recognized that all of us are alike and all of us are different.  However, those differences don’t keep us from becoming friends or functioning in our families or classroom.  We acted out different scenarios in our classroom to show the right way to handle a classroom situation.  The kids did an excellent job!!!

read the book Enemy Pie

This is How I Got My Name... come in our room & read them!

Our guided reading groups have been discussing what great readers do...make predictions, make connections, ask questions, visualize in their head and infer and make good guesses.  We have been reading in pairs, to ourselves and to the teacher.
Reading Lessons for Phonics this week -op, -sh, -ill, ick sounds

There was real enthusiasm about the stories this week.  Mrs. Waller read the big book"Fireflies, Fireflies, Light My Way" By Jonathan London.  The children loved making predictions and discussing the beginning, middle and end of the story.  These discussions are invaluable for all of us.  Mrs. Waller and Miss Fate have been observing the students reading.  They amaze us every day with their incredible reading abilities.

Miss Fate has been continuing to guide the children in their grammar books.  We are continuing to practice writing good sentences and working on punctuation and ending marks.  This week we concentrated on ?'s and !'s.  The kids were introduced to their Writing Words Dictionaries in their cubbies.  These are a great resource when they get stumped on how to spell a word they can look it up in their dictionaries or add the word.  We use the books to help us with our writing.

Mini Lesson on Punctuation

On Wednesday morning......We met our new buddies (Mr. Reschke's 7th Grade Homeroom Class)  It was really fun introducing ourselves and showing them our first grade work.We have such a great bunch of kids. Everyone was so excited to sit with each other at Friday's Chapel.

Math
Miss Fate has introduced doubles to the children in Math this week (1+1=2, 2+2=4, etc.) and we have had a blast. The children have been singing their Doubles RAP, they have moved their bodies to represent doubles, and have written equations on their dry erase boards. We have also rolled large dice to review and help us memorize our facts. We know some of the doubles are easy for the students; however, now we are teaching them how to use their doubles and their neighbors to help them become quicker with their mental math.  We will be having a doubles test in a few weeks. A note came home earlier this week with your child.
They also learned a song about even and odds to the tune "BINGO" we are still working on it.  It goes like this....There was a farmer who had a dog & EVEN was his namo ....0,2,4,6,8 then we do it again with ODDS.

Both teachers and students are enjoying getting to know more about everyone in the class. On Friday we celebrated the ending of our theme, Myself, Others and A Caring Community.   We had such a great time, please take a look at the pictures below! A special thank you goes to the room mothers who helped organize the treats and drinks for our celebration. Thank you to Jill Woolley for the delicious cookies, Kama Moseley for the wonderful drinks and to Kay Gaffney for providing the plates & napkins. The children had such a great time!

TNT- The Firefighters showed up!!!!
(Try New Things) The Firefighters came and brought a pumper truck along with them.  They talked to the kids about how to behave when they are in a situation where they need a firefighters assistance.  Also, about the importance of calling 911.  They should stay on the phone until they tell you to hang up. The kids all had the chance to get in the fire truck and sit in their seats.
