"An Autumnish Feeling"

We Only Have Eyes for You!

I've got an Autumish Feeling...Ghostbusters and musical madness is in the air!  WHOOOOO has time to think about Halloween?

We've been subtracting this week.  We've had opportunities to work with smaller groups by working in rotations.  We used our HUGE number line and walked off the subtraction problems.  The students had to find the DIFFERENCE....

We worked on Bear Logic in our notebooks in a group, worked with manipulatives (always) and rolled alot of dice to find answers.

What is 9-4 Van???

Joshua and William figuring it out!

Show me you know it!

During Integrated Language this week we made a creepy spider, listened to "A Bear Snores On" in our listening center, wrote bear fact sentences after we matched the beginning of the sentence to the end of the sentence, worked on Halloween stories with Mrs. Wiedeman and Ms. Lorfing, worked on contractions in our phonics book, matched opposites ---antonyms, found nouns in our Halloween books, sorted nouns by person, place or thing and wrote about our pet goblin.  We also worked on an October calendar on Starfall website and listened to a Pumpkin story while we followed along on Starfall .

In Computer lab we went to a wonderful website called abcya.com where we started with the hundreds board filling in missing random numbers.  We then graduated to a blank hundreds board and found numbers based on what we have learned about counting by 5's and 10's.   We also hit the balloon subtraction .  All these were great places to practice our math skills.

Scarlett's grandma Schmidt and her husband "Pastor" Schmidt came to talk to both classes about their experiences in Alaska with bears.  They had a skull of a brown bear and statues of other bears.  Mrs. Schmidt wore bear claw earrings that were really cool.

Science this week brought out some polar bears!!!  How do the polar bears keep warm?  What do we wear in the winter to keep warm?  We learned that it's the black skin that is under the fur that keeps the heat in.  We talked about animals that have blubber and that helps keep them warm.

We love visitors!  Thank you for stopping by the room after the performance to get a feel for first grade.

All School Pencil Collection Project
October 25th – November 7th, 2012

Atem Akui is a current second grade student at St. Paul’s whose father is originally from Sudan, Africa. Since Atem was six years old, he has been collecting pencils and school supplies for the children of South Sudan when he learned that children there do not have any support for their education. In fact, they sit under any big tree and write in the dirt with their fingers. Atem has voluntarily given up a lot of things to make sure he can make a difference in the lives of the Sudanese children.
Just last year, Atem refused to have a birthday party in order to meet his goal of 10,000 pencils. Atem’s previous school and channel 41 honored him last school year for collecting 12,334 pencils!  This year his goal is 20,000 pencils!

Students in St. Paul’s School and St. Paul’s Church members are invited to donate to this worthy project in the next two weeks.

We invite each St. Paul’s student and the family to help Atem reach his goal by bringing in new, unopened boxes or bags of pencils anytime between
Wednesday, October 25th and Wednesday,  November 7th . Pencils can be placed in the large boxes found on each floor of the Lower School, in the blue tub at the greeting spot in ECC, and in the receptacle organized by MS on the third floor. We thank you for supporting the children of South Sudan and Atem Akui’s honorable mission!
Atem and his mother will be delivering the pencils to the children of South Sudan in December of this year.
