Mrs. Waller has worked very hard with the students guiding them on their Halloween stories. We can't wait to share them with you!  You won't believe how far they have come in just two months of school.

Our centers continue with an introduction to contractions. We used contraction songs and we used our Writing Words Books.  There is a section in them full of different contractions.  With Miss Fate we made contraction flap books.  The kids enjoyed picking out their contractions as well as writing and reading them. Then, we also worked on contractions in our phonics books to follow up on what we have learned. It was a great way to help with the introduction of this concept. It can be a difficult one and by no means do we expect your children to master it, but your children are off to a great start.

In Math we have continued Bear Logic, which allows your children to use their problem solving abilities.  They LOVE Bear Logic! The children also walked the number line practicing subtraction problems using their bodies.  It was a fun game we played out in the commons. This week the children reviewed that addition means to put together and subtraction means to take away.

Our 1st Grade Music rehearsals & performance was awesome! Thanks so much to Mrs. Haskamp and all her hard work! The children did a great job!!!

Social Studies: Thank you to Scarlett's grandparents that came and talked with all the first graders about bears.  They lived in Alaska and did a wonderful presentation for the children.  Miss Fate taught the children about Spectacled bears as they worked in their theme notebooks.

Computer Lab this week with Miss Fate & Mrs. Wiedeman the children played on the website:www.abcya.com & reviewed 100's charts, subtraction, addition & more!  The children also moved tiles in the correct order to help improve their number sense.  They are computer tech experts on this site!

Hands on Science with Mrs. Waller & Miss Lorfing was so cool.  The kids learned about The Little Polar Bear and dipped their hands in Crisco & ice to represent the cold and show that fur & blubber protect Polar Bears ...it was cold but awesome!!!

All School Pencil Collection Project
October 25th – November 7th, 2012
Atem Akui is a current second grade student at St. Paul’s whose father is originally from Sudan, Africa. Since Atem was six years old, he has been collecting pencils and school supplies for the children of South Sudan when he learned that children there do not have any support for their education. In fact, they sit under any big tree and write in the dirt with their fingers. Atem has voluntarily given up a lot of things to make sure he can make a difference in the lives of the Sudanese children. Just last year, Atem refused to have a birthday party in order to meet his goal of 10,000 pencils. Atem’s previous school and channel 41 honored him last school year for collecting 12,334 pencils!  This year his goal is 20,000 pencils! Students in St. Paul’s School and St. Paul’s Church members are invited to donate to this worthy project in the next two weeks. We invite each St. Paul’s student and the family to help Atem reach his goal by bringing in new, unopened boxes or bags of pencils anytime between Wednesday, October 25th and Wednesday,  November 7th . Pencils can be placed in the large boxes found on each floor of the Lower School, in the blue tub at the greeting spot in ECC, and in the receptacle organized by MS on the third floor. We thank you for supporting the children of South Sudan and Atem Akui’s honorable mission! Atem and his mother will be delivering the pencils to the children of South Sudan in December of this year.

FYI:
Author Katie Speck has an upcoming event at the Reading Reptile.  She will also make an appearance that this year's book fair.  Check out Mr. N's blog to find out more!

Special Teacher Request***If you could save water bottle caps just the tops for us and send them into school we would love to use them to make a center. (We need about 60 of them thanks!)

***If your child is hot lunch they still need to bring a snack each day.  We are having many children forgetting their snacks and we are running low in the classroom.  Thank you for helping us remind them.

Quote of the week:
"Miss Fate I want a playdate with you!!  I mean that I really do!!!.....said an anonymous first grader."

We look forward to seeing all of you next week at parent/teacher conferences. We are having such a great year and we can't wait to visit with you about your children. See you then!
Love, Mrs. Waller and Miss Fate
