Busy, busy first graders!

The first graders in our class are such hard workers!  They are very busy bees and we couldn't be more proud of them!

In literacy learning this week our focus in word work was "ed" and "ing" endings, antonyms, nouns, verbs, adjectives and short "o" words.  Our writing focus consisted of putting sentences together and remembering to capitalize the beginning and use correct punctuation at the end.  We also are working in our handwriting books practicing going from top to bottom and forming letters using the magic C.  In reading we focused on connecting to books with text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world connections.  We're also working on reading strategies and comprehension.

In math we took our doubles test as well as an end of quarter assessment.  These first graders know their doubles, patterns, even and odds, counting by 2s, 5s, 10s and can write their numbers to 100!  We are working on subtraction and are also focusing on identifying numbers that are greater than/less than with symbols: > < =
Taking their doubles test with their spy caves!

In social studies and science we continue to learn about all the different types of bears in our world.  To date we have learned about polar bears, black bears including the Asian black bear and brown bears including the Kodiak bear and the grizzly bear.  Our first graders have such a great memory when it comes to retaining bear facts such as their habitat, food, size, where they live in our world and which bears are endangered.  Please take some time to ask your child about all the great facts he/she knows about bears!

Adding all their great bear facts to the polar bear!

We celebrated two birthdays this week in our class.
Happy birthday to Addie and Noah!

In hands on science we learned about attributes and went outside to explore and find how many different attributes we coulf find.  We found things that were shiny, rough, smooth, multicolored, patterns, pointy, hard, and soft.
