Going on a Bear Hunt

Going on a Bear Hunt!

We're Gonna Catch a Big One!

There are many reading strategies first graders are asked to remember when they are reading and they come across a word in text they don't know.  It is music to our ears to hear these students using their strategies while they read directions or books.  Many first graders want to write elaborate stories and do but we are in the process of teaching them the process of doing just that.   In both Mrs. Wiedeman's and Ms. Lorfing's time with them this week we have talked about nouns and subjects of sentences.    We have identified nouns and which are capitalized.  Some of us were framing out short "u" words in our stories this week as well.

Many of these first graders learned Magic "C' in Pre-K and Kindergarten. In first grade we take it to the other letters that begin with Magic C  like o-d-b-g-p.  Beautiful work has come home from their efforts.  We are having two handwriting lessons a week .

We had a beautiful day at Carolyn's Country Cousins Pumpkin Patch on Wednesday.   Everyone brought home a pie pumpkin of their chosing.  I will be making my pumpkin cake over the weekend with mine.  We loved the hayride, the petting zoo and the playground.    When we came back to school we made a pattern with our pumpkins in the commons.  It was 6 orange pumpkins, one dark pumpkin, and two mini pumpkins etc... We tried to get our mini pumpkins to equal the weight of the little bears we have and some candy corn.  We also used a bar graph to show who had biggest pumpkins and smallest pumpkins.

Ms. Lorfing worked on some Bear Logic with the students and they measured in "bear" feet from their desk to the door, to the teacher's desk, to the calendar and to the listening center.  In subtraction
we teach them to look at the "part we know" "the answer" and "what part is missing."  We have done bear graphing.  There are so many traits that set all of our bears apart.

Bears with black noses..

How many bears does it take to equal a mini pumpkin?

Going on a Bear Hunt....We went through the grass, over the bridge, over the mud, through the snowstorm, and into the cave.  We found a BEAR!!!!

Buddy Run was today and we had a great time!  There is so much excitement surrounding this day.  It's a healthy way to spend some time with our buddies.   Check out the pictures.  They speak volumes...
