| Our beautiful classroom community art work...Still in progress! |
This week rounds up our first theme of first grade, "Myself, Others and a Caring Community". Can you believe it's almost October?? Our sweet first graders were using their best handwriting this week to write an important title and we could not believe how much their handwriting has improved! Mrs. Waller was doing number corner this week and we couldn't believe how much their mental math computation skills have improved! Ms. Lorfing was out on the playground and when the whistle blew she heard so many kids saying, "Great game!", "You played so good today!", "You are a really good hula-hooper!" and we couldn't believe what great friends everyone has become and how much they've already grown! To summarize,
WE ARE SO PROUD OF THESE FIRST GRADERS!!!
We can't wait to show off all their amazing skills to you in just a few short weeks at parent/teacher conferences.
In the meanwhile, take a peek at just a bit of all the great learning your children have done this week!

In math our focus this week was learning the friends of 10. We created a chart to help us learn the different combinations that when added together equal 10. Then, we practiced friends of 10 with dot cards. Take a minute to ask your child to recite to you all of 10's friends! We also continue learning different problem solving strategies. So far we've learned about using logical reasoning, making organized lists, using a picture, using a table and guessing and checking. These are all specific strategies that can help solve tricky word problems.

| Lily is using an app on the ipad called "quickimages" that helps to learn friends of 10. |

In social studies we finished sharing our family collages. Then, we jumped right into sharing the information each child brought in to share how they got their names. The class has enjoyed learning new, interesting information about their friends. We love using all of our fun different applauses to celebrate each child's excellent presentation. Ask your child to show you what the "Firecracker" and the "Lookin Good" applauses look like! We also learned about the difference between a rural, suburban and urban community.
| We sorted pictures of different communities. |
| We made a flip book to show what can be found in each community. |
| Oscar, Jackson and Eli sharing their family collages. What great presentations! |

In TNT we had the opportunity to have some special 4-legged "community helpers" visit us! They're names were Bella, Wyatt, Giesel, Molly and Daisy. These cute pups came to visit the first grade to teach us how to approach dogs and other important dog safety tips. These special friends are from a program called, Pets for Life. Many of these dogs even had business cards to hand out!
| When we approach a new dog we may want to stand like a tree or give them a meatball fist. |
| If we're scared of a dog's action we may need to do a body tuck. |
| Lamar is showing the correct way to pet a dog. |
| Daisy was a very good dog teacher! |
| Sophia wants to pet Molly. |
| After Lily asked for permission, she got to pet sweet Molly. |
| Sophie is giving Daisy a meatball fist so she can smell her first. The children learned it is important for dogs to do this first before they receive love from you! It helps them get to know you. |
| Daisy loves getting love form Naomi! |
| Geisel is smiling for the camera!! |
THANK YOU TO OUR GREAT PARENT VOLUNTEERS!!
Next week will kick off our new exciting theme,
"Bears of the World"! On Monday, September 30th your child may bring a teddy bear to school to be used in graphing, writing stories, etc. Please send bears no larger than approximately 2 feet tall if possible. Bears will get to stay on top of everyone's cubbies for the entire theme. The children love bringing their favorite bears in to add to the love we share in our room. Please remind your child to chose a bear suitable for the space above their cubby and one they will be alright with leaving it at school for up to 6 weeks!
