We are so excited to be in our new unit of study-- BEARS! It's a wonderful theme filled with lots of fun and information.
In Language Arts, we started the week on Monday by going over all of our new centers. The majority of the activities are all review to reinforce skills we have learned up until this point in the year. In small groups, Miss Fate worked with students reading books at their level and visualizing things about the story. An important reading skill is being able to picture things in your mind to improve comprehension. Mrs. Wyllie's groups worked on recognizing and writing different types of sentences in preparation for starting our Halloween stories next week. Take a look at the great work we are doing!!

In math, we are reviewing some skills and introducing a couple of new things as well. Miss Fate focused on doubles facts-- ask your child to hear the doubles rap!! The students got to do lots of hands on activities to help reinforce their knowledge of doubles facts. Mrs. Wyllie focused on missing addends using friends of 10, 10 frames, and even more difficult equations like 8+ ___ = 17. It was awesome to see all the different strategies the children use in solving these missing addend problems!

In Social Studies, we introduced our new bear theme. Students helped to create a KWL chart (what we already know, what we want to know, and eventually what we learned.) We focused on learning about the black bear this week. The students also got to introduce their teddy bears to the class. We are happy to welcome our new 1st grade bears: Maine bear, Zusi, Yoda, Bozo, Ted Brownie Gould, Nakita, Blacky, Reese, Marshy, Benkenobe, Victor, Buggy, Fluffy, Cha-Cha, Fluff Biscuit, Lucy Cupcake, Black-eyed colorful cheer, Kerby, Chef's Chair, Honey, Harry, Hugable Warm Rapper, and Coffee!
