Our Last Days Down Under

Welcome back from spring break! We hope you enjoyed the extra time with your children. It has been fun to hear all about the fun things they did over break!

We've been busy this week wrapping up our Australia unit. Your children have learned so much and have had lots of fun doing it!

On Tuesday, we had a very special guest, Bill Gordh, come and tell stories to us.  We loved it!

Language Arts Block
During centers, students finished up some Australia activities, practiced spelling words, and much more. In teacher-guided groups, we started writing about going on a {fill in the blank} hunt. Students came up with an Australian animal to fill in the blank and adjectives to complete their writing. We also did a guided activity with Wombat Stew.

Math
In math this week, we started our study of measurement.  We love this unit!  We talked about the two different types of measurement- standard and non-standard.  Then we were visited by the Easter Bunny, a Leprechaun, and Detective O'Connor!  The students had to measure a footprint to solve the mystery.  We also went on a measurement scavenger hunt using different types of non-standard measurement tools.

Social Studies/TNT
We wrapped up our Australian unit! Students got to watch and listen to a couple of different Australian themed stories. They also demonstrated how much they have learned by presenting their Australian Animal Research Papers.  The highlight of the week was taking a trip to the land down under, thanks to Sophie Trainor's mom! We had so much fun listening to her talk about her home land and seeing pictures and video of Australia.

Practicing our Didgeridoo Technique
Computer Lab
The children visited ABCya.com to practice place value!  With all of their practice, the students have gained a much deeper understanding of this difficult concept.  We are proud of all of their hard work!

Hands on Science
Students learned all about our solar system.  We learned that all planets revolve around the sun, and that one full revolution equals one year.  We also reviewed that earth rotates on its axis, which makes day and night.  Then we became the planets and demonstrated it outside!

Spelling Words:
Words: handle, wiggle, single, little, turtle, apple, pickle, saddle, tickle, buckle
