Fall Fun in First Grade!

We've had a wonderful week! We finished up our "Myself, Others, and a Caring Community" theme and will move on to our "Bears" theme next week. We had a little celebration today to commemorate our first theme. A big thank-you to Andi McCarthy for the delicious treats that we enjoyed!!

We also had our first field trip and celebrated Gabriel's birthday this week!

Mr. Ronan told a Halloween story on the way to the patch.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GABRIEL!!

In centers we reviewed short 'i' and short 'o' sounds, made proper sentences with capital letters and punctuation marks, reviewed evens/odds and friends of ten, reinforced our spelling skills, practiced nouns, did some activities about community helpers, and practiced rhyming words.

We also worked in our guided reading groups!

We continued with theme pages and 'How I Got My Name' presentations in social studies this week. We also talked a bit about Christopher Columbus. Ms. Lorfing's class made flap books about different communities and what characterizes each one!

In math this week we reviewed skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s, worked on doubles from 1-10, and we started working on solving problems with missing addends! Quiz your kiddos and see how they do!

In hands-on science we used milk, soap, and food coloring to learn a little about the properties of milk proteins and the effect that soap has on those proteins (it weakens the bonds that hold the proteins and fats in the solution). The soap has bipolar characteristics: The water-loving end of the molecule dissolves in water, while the water-fearing end tries to find a fat globule in the milk. As the soap molecules race around to find fat molecules, the food coloring molecules are bumped in every direction. It results in an explosion of color!

In computer lab we used Kidspiration to make "All About Me" pages.
