Long, long ago...

Long, long ago…in the first grade classrooms lived 44 children.  They were so busy working they didn't realize how much they were really learning…What a wonderful week!  We cannot believe it is almost May already!  Next week, we will wrap up Fairy Tales and Folktales, and then we will be onto our short Merry Month of May!

Literacy Centers
We LOVE guided groups!  This week, we have been working on our readers' theater scripts & homophones.  We are learning all about our Fairy Tale characters and improving on reading with expression.

Math
In math this week the kids are continuing to practice measurement.  We worked on standard measurement and the difference between centimeters and inches.  The kids also used rulers and measuring tapes to measure one another.  They played a knock of the clock math game to review our facts.  We learned how to do Versatiles & started some Folktale Math.

Versatiles

We have been learning all about the valuable resources our Earth provides for us for the past couple weeks.  During TNT, in celebration of Earth Day, we created our own Earth Circles, detailing what we can do to help our planet!

TNT & Social Studies: We have been presenting our fairy tale and folktale book banners in Mrs. Sansale's class.  The kids love learning about all of them!  They did a fantastic job on thier book banners they are hanging in the hall come by and check them out!!!!  We also worked on our fliers for our lemonade and cookie stand.  The kids loved making them. They will get to hand them out next week with parent supervision. We decided 50 cents for a cookie & 50 cents for a cup of lemonade.  Our goal this year is to try and beat last years....we want to raise $3,200 for Haiti....we think we can do it!
Hands-on-Science
We made our own beanstalks to go along with Jack and the Beanstalk! We talked about what plants need to grow and made a hypothesis for when our lima bean will sprout.  We can't wait to watch them grow!

Spelling:
Skill: irregular plurals
Words: brushes, foxes, bosses, boxes, lunches, dresses, glasses, matches, wishes, dishes
Challege: lemonade, children, Haiti, geese
SURPRISE!!!!!????????

INFORMATION FOR OUR STAND:

1. The children have created fliers to help market their lemonade and cookie stand. We realize this is somewhat "old school" but it is one way the children can really be involved. We are instructing the kids to distribute the fliers around their neighborhoods with an adult. We also encourage distribution at parents' workplaces or coffee shops- only if appropriate. We will send these home at the beginning of next week!

2. Sometime next week, we will send out an email blast that you can forward on to anyone and everyone you know-as a means of further advertisement; friends, family, neighborhood associations, etc. THANK YOU!

3. Please remember to sign-up on our Sign-Up Genius to help volunteer at our stand.

Thank you for your support! The response has been amazing. WOW! Your children are learning what it truly means to give and how good giving makes you feel.

OTHER REMINDERS:
1. Friday April, 29th-your child may come to school dressed as their favorite fairy tale or folktale character. The information on this came home earlier this week. This is completely OPTIONAL! It is the last day of our theme and just one way we celebrate.
